Pushing Forward

General Patton, commander of the American Third Army following D-Day in 1944 was once asked about whether he would retreat or not. His response was (and I quote loosely) “I never retreat. I hate paying for the same real estate twice.” Whether we think of Patton as a proper Christian role model or not one thing can be said of him, he spoke his mind and he looked for positive results from his fighting men. He even said of his men, “I don’t want them to like me. I want them to fear me more than they do the Germans.”

It is not the same with our church and our calling as Christian people. We do what we do because God loves us and we love God. Our Relationship to God is dictated by a very strong sense of loyalty and respect. In our heart we fear disappointing God in the same way we might fear disappointing a parent we have grown to love very much.

Because of this, we put behind us the old self that is lost in its sinful ways and we embrace a new self God is making alive within us through the power of His grace. This is what it means to “die to self so we may be alive to Christ.” As we come to worship, we do so because that part of God is calling us to grow in our faith and in our relationship to Him. We want to do this because God loves us and we love God.

Stephen

Choir Notes

Choir practice will continue through
June 25th. During the month of July,
we will not practice and then
return to practice August 6th.

ATTENTION SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES
The summer is upon us! I understand that in
the past, the Sunday school classes have filled the choir loft during the month of July. Would you consider doing this again? It allows you to see the worship service from a different perspective and it gives the choir members a chance to sit with their families. I will make out a schedule and place it in your classroom within the next few weeks.

Handbell choir will break for the summer.
